I · THE ANIMAL

Meet the tardigrade.

Half a millimetre long, with eight legs. It lives almost everywhere on Earth, from mountaintops to the deep sea. People call it the water bear, or the moss piglet. It has been around for over 500 million years.

II · CRYPTOBIOSIS

It can switch life off.

When its water disappears, it curls into a dry ball called a tun and almost completely shuts down. It can stay like that for decades. Add water, and it comes back. Scientists call this cryptobiosis.

III · NEARLY INDESTRUCTIBLE

What it survives.

Temperatures near absolute zero and above 150°C. Radiation hundreds of times the dose that kills a human. In 2007, tardigrades were sent into orbit and exposed to the vacuum of space. Many came back alive.

IV · HYPERLIQUID

It lives on liquidity.

A tardigrade is only active in liquid. Hyperliquid is the most liquid place in crypto. And Hyperliquid survives too: the JellyJelly squeeze in March 2025, and 10/10, the biggest liquidation day in crypto history. The chain kept running.

V · WHY ELYSIUM

Everyone on Elysium is in cryptobiosis.

Elysium is Hyperliquid’s first L2. Right now you can bridge in, but nobody can bridge out until mainnet. So everyone who made it in is doing exactly what a tardigrade does: curled up, holding still, waiting for the liquidity to arrive. The tardigrade has been doing it for 500 million years. In Greek myth, Elysium is where heroes rest after surviving everything. It fits.
